Stomach Flu and Norovirus Home Care
Care Instructions
Sudden stomach flu is a common holiday ailment, most often caused by a virus (e.g., norovirus). Symptoms begin rapidly and include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps. The disease is highly contagious but usually resolves in a healthy person within a few days with rest. The most important treatment is hydration.
Treating stomach flu at home
The priority is to prevent dehydration. Drink small amounts of fluid frequently, for example, a spoonful every 5–10 minutes. The best drinks are oral rehydration solutions from a pharmacy, diluted juice, tea, or mineral water. Avoid drinking large amounts of plain water, as it does not replace lost salts. Also, avoid dairy products and caffeine during the acute phase of the illness.
Stay in your accommodation and avoid contact with other people to prevent spreading the infection. Norovirus spreads very easily via surfaces, so hand hygiene is paramount. Start eating carefully when the nausea subsides (e.g., toast, banana, blueberry soup).
Contact a doctor if:
- Vomiting is severe and continues for more than 24 hours.
- Fluids do not stay down and there are signs of dehydration (intense thirst, dark urine, dizziness).
- Diarrhea is bloody or accompanied by severe abdominal pain.
