Eye Infection Home Care
Care Instructions
An eye infection (conjunctivitis) is a common ailment that can affect the eyelids, conjunctiva, or the surface of the eye. Inflammation can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or wind. Typical symptoms include discharge (pus), increased tearing, redness, sensitivity to light, and a gritty sensation in the eye.
Treating an eye infection at home
The most important part of home care is regular cleaning of the eyes. If a doctor has prescribed antibiotic drops, use them as directed. Always wash your hands thoroughly. Clean the eye using a cotton pad moistened with clean water, wiping from the outer corner of the eye toward the inner corner. Use a separate pad for each eye.
To apply eye drops, gently pull the lower eyelid down and drop the medicine into the “pocket” formed. Be careful not to touch the eye with the tip of the bottle. Eye infections spread easily, so use your own towel and pillowcase.
Contact a doctor if:
- You experience intense pain or light sensitivity in the eye.
- Vision becomes impaired or blurry.
- The eye produces a heavy, purulent discharge.
- Symptoms do not improve after 3–4 days of home care.
