Sore Throat Home Care

Care Instructions

A sore throat is a common ailment, most often caused by a viral pharyngitis (common cold). Lapland’s dry freezing air and mechanical ventilation in accommodations can also irritate mucous membranes, causing scratchiness. Sometimes the cause is bacterial (Group A Streptococcus), known as “strep throat.” Sudden, severe throat pain with fever but without a runny nose may indicate a bacterial infection.

Treating a sore throat at home

Most sore throats heal on their own in about a week. The main goal is symptom relief. Anti-inflammatory painkillers (such as ibuprofen) or paracetamol are effective for throat pain and swelling. Lozenges and sprays from the pharmacy can temporarily numb the throat and make swallowing easier.

Drink plenty of fluids. Warm drinks (e.g., tea with honey) or cold drinks and ice cream can both feel soothing; try which works best for you. Avoid smoking and dry, hard foods that scratch the throat. If the air in your room feels very dry, try to humidify it (e.g., by placing a wet towel on a radiator).

Contact a doctor if:

  • The sore throat is severe and you have a high fever (over 38°C / 100.4°F) but no runny nose or cough (suspected strep throat).
  • Swallowing is extremely difficult or opening your mouth is painful.
  • You have swollen, tender lymph nodes on your neck.
  • The pain lasts more than a week or is one-sided.
